FibroScan (Transient Elastography)

A FibroScan (also called transient elastography) is a non-invasive test used to assess the health of your liver—especially liver stiffness (fibrosis) and fat accumulation (steatosis).

What FibroScan Measures

1. Liver Stiffness (Fibrosis Score)

  • Measured in kPa (kilopascals)
  • Indicates how much scarring (fibrosis) is present

Typical interpretation may vary slightly depending on the liver condition.

2. CAP Score (Controlled Attenuation Parameter)

  • Measured in dB/m (decibels per meter)
  • Shows fat content in the liver

Why FibroScan is Done

  • Detect fatty liver (NAFLD/NASH)
  • Evaluate liver fibrosis or cirrhosis
  • Monitor chronic liver diseases (Hepatitis B, C, alcohol-related disease)
  • Avoid or reduce the need for liver biopsy

Procedure

  • You lie on your back with your right arm raised
  • A probe is placed on your skin (similar to ultrasound)
  • It sends painless vibrations into the liver
  • The test takes about 5–10 minutes
  • No needles and no sedation are required

Things That Affect Results

  • Recent meals (fasting for 2–3 hours is recommended)
  • Obesity
  • Inflammation (hepatitis flare)
  • Alcohol intake
  • Congestion (heart failure)

Advantages of FibroScan

  • Non-invasive, quick, and painless
  • Provides immediate results
  • Can be repeated regularly for monitoring

Limitations

  • Less accurate in very obese patients or in patients with ascites
  • Cannot completely replace liver biopsy in all cases
